The idea to prepare an edition of Caroliâs Liber dierum lucensium was born during my long conversations with the late Salvatore Camporeale, conversations which were held mostly in Florence, between Santa Maria Novella and Villa I Tatti during 2000 and 2002. We thought of working on this edition together, after the completion of my Ph.D. dissertation under Salvatoreâs supervision, relying on his detailed studies of Caroli. Salvatoreâs untimely death in 2002 meant that this task was left for me to complete. Naturally this edition is dedicated to Salvatore, the first modern scholar who dedicated several profound studies to Caroli and his importance to the intellectual life in Florence during the last decades of the Quattrocento.
During the long years of working on this edition I have been relying on the vast knowledge and experience, in classical matters as well as in textual criticism and philology, of John Glucker, whom I first met as a student in the Department of Classics in Tel-Aviv University during the 1990s. Johnâs critical eye has been crucial and, to put it simply, I just cannot recognise this edition without his many excellent remarks, corrections and suggestions. I feel very privileged to have been working with him and, more than anything else, for his friendship. In this case as well it was natural to dedicate the edition to John.
Luc Deitz read several early versions of this edition and his critique and good advice always brought it to the next level. It was James Hankins who first suggested to me the possibility of submitting my edition to the Renaissance Society of AmericaâTexts and Studies (RSA-TS) series, published by Brill. I am grateful to him and to two anonymous readers of the edition who offered some excellent suggestions. I also wish to express my gratitude to the general editor of the series, Ingrid De Smet, for her support, and to Brillâs editor Ivo Romein, for his useful remarks.
My greatest gratitude goes as always to my partner, Smadar Zemach, and to our beloved cat Lulu who left us in great sorrow after twenty years of pure love in 2015.
