Abstract

This chapter is a survey of the education of ministers in Scotland beginning with a contextual brief of pre-Reformation clerical education followed by a more detailed review of education for the ministry in post-1560 Reformation Scotland to 1638. The latter will include changes made in theological education and formation (planned and actual), the centres of study, Continental influences, curriculum, key leaders, the role of the presbytery âexercise,â and the standards for completion of a course of study. Key developments will include, but will not be limited to, the strategic directives of the First Book of Discipline phase, the later Melvillian new foundation ideals, and the subsequent episcopalian period as proposed at the Aberdeen General Assembly in 1616.
