Abstract

This chapter will examine a range of texts which focus on the formation, deformation, and reformation of the Church and religious life in Scotland during the period of ca.1525â1567. The greatest attention will be given to works of popular literature, and to the several ways in which institutional corruption and the need for reformation are presented. Signs of Lutheran (and, somewhat later, Reformed) influence will be reviewed, and texts internal to the Catholic Church will also be noted. The sociological aspects of religious publicity and its rhetorical expression will be relevant (popular, learned), as will the mechanics of dissemination (circulation of manuscripts and prints, importation of literature from abroad). The central concern will be: how was it possible for a significant section of the country to be apparently persuaded to change its mind on matters of such significance?
