Abstract

This contribution focuses on Joseph Addisonâs Cato, the 18th-century tragedy that attained widespread acclaim in Europe and America. It analyzes Addisonâs Cato in the light of Lucanâs Bellum Civile drawing out similarities and at times instances of departure in the political and ideological economy of both works. In both texts Cato emerges as affected by passions but also as a Stoic, committed patriot.As a result,Cato is able tomotivate and inflame contemporary and future audiences to resist to arbitrary powers.
