This volume is the most recent outcome of a fruitful cooperation between the Forschungszentrum Historische Geisteswissenschaften (Frankfurt Humanities Research Centre) at Goethe University Frankfurt, founded in 2010, and Tel Aviv University’s Minerva Institute for German History, established in 1971. Both institutions explore the historical specifics and genealogies of different objects of study seeking to observe long-term patterns and processes. In autumn 2014 they jointly organized the international workshop “Textures of War. Writing the First World War” in Tel Aviv, which paved the way for the conference “The Disasters of Violence, War and Extremism 1813–2015” held at the Goethe University Frankfurt in July 2015, on which this volume is partly based. We would like to cordially thank all those who supported the German-Israeli academic exchange, particularly Prof. Dr. Galili Shahar, the director of the Minerva Institute for German History.

Moreover, we are very grateful to all partners who enabled the transnational cooperation financially. It was funded by the Erasmus+ program “Strategic Partnerships for universities” issued by the European Commission and assigned by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD). Generous donations from two private foundations, the Marga und Kurt Möllgaard-Stiftung im Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, Essen and the Dr. Bodo Sponholz-Stiftung für Wohlfahrt, Kunst und Wissen, Frankfurt am Main, were equally important. Additional financial support was provided by the Frankfurt Humanities Research Centre and the Institut für Romanische Sprachen und Literaturen (Institute for Romance Studies) at Goethe University. We want to thank all of these institutions, whose generous support enabled us to host a successful and stimulating conference.

Furthermore, we would like to cordially thank all those who made this book possible. Prof. Dr. Mihran Dabag kindly offered us to publish this volume in Wilhelm Fink Verlag’s series Genozid und Gedächtnis (genocide and memory), whereas the generous support of the Franziska und Georg Speyer’sche Hochschulstiftung allowed us to print this book. Furthermore, we would like to show our gratitude to all contributors. We are thankful for their instructive research, their priceless reliability and their friendly support. Last, but not least, we express our strong gratitude to Monika Beck and to Janneke Rauscher M. A., both from the Frankfurt Humanities Research Centre. In particular, Janneke Rauscher’s continuous commitment and most valuable contributions to the editing process of this volume, in proofreading the texts and keeping in contact with the authors, cannot be overestimated.
