The antinomy established by Eros e Thanatos, or Death and the Principle of Pleasure, rules the universe of artistic creation and is invoked in every impulse or creative act. Throughout the Pop Art period, which coincided historically with the manipulation of seductive images drawn out of the outdoor advertisements (Rosenquist, Lindner) or the eroticized series âGreat American Nude,â by Wesselman, a parody of the âThe Great American Novel,â the Erotic has been somewhat annulled by the huge scale used in the depiction of its alleged properties. In the Portuguese visual arts context, SÃ¡ Nogueira (1921-2002), a painter of considerable relevance, proposed to treat this theme by crossing the boundaries of the socially accepted after a stay in London, where he studied with Michael Andrews at the Slade School of Fine Art (1961-1964). Throughout the sixties, he painted many socially committed themes, related to the status of the African race as well as womenâs liberation. Between 1967 and 1970, SÃ¡ Nogueira dedicated his easel painting to two series of acrylic painted canvases (âErotropoâ and âShungaâ), both of which used photographic resources, along with the concepts of fragment, seriality, repetition and abstraction, as well as photo-collage. This production was based on two sorts of materials: cut-out images from pornographic content magazines (a type of periodicals whose commercialization was forbidden at the time in Portugalâs dictatorial regime and was therefore eradicated by its censorship) and Japanese erotic âShungaâ woodcarvings, a pictorial genre practiced anonymously by renowned painters between the 17^th and the 19^th centuries, pertaining to a wider range of engravings, literally called Images of the Floating World. One of the difficulties in representing the Erotic comes from Baudrillardâs assertion that there is nothing less safe today than sex, through the liberation of its discourse, or desire and through the proliferation of its images (âDe la Seduction,â 1979).
