Postmodern women writers of the Female Gothic subvert the traditional Gothic plot based on the Oedipal development of identity by destroying the patriarchal notion of social and sexual female identity as repressed, passive, receptive, lacking, and âother.â Considered to be a subgenre of the Gothic, fairy tales are also built upon this formulaic Gothic plot which victimizes and imprisons women within patriarchal structures and which portrays the female body as the object of male desire. This chapter aims to analyse Angela Carterâs âThe Tigerâs Brideâ and Emma Donoghueâs âThe Tale of the Rose,â which are subversive rewritings of the Madame Leprince de Beaumontâs âBeauty and the Beast,â in terms of their portrayal of female desire as active, autonomous and liberated from patriarchally constructed sexual roles. In this respect, since the active female sexuality does not have any representation in the symbolic order, it is represented by abject imagery which has the potential to transgress the boundaries of the ideologically constructed female identity and provide new definitions of female sexuality. These issues will be discussed in these stories in the light of Julia Kristevaâs theory of the abject presented in her seminal work Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection (1982) which radically lays bare the unsettling and non-conforming nature of these two postmodern Female Gothic works.
