Colm Toibinâs The Master and Emma Donoghueâs The Sealed Letter are two recent neo-Victorian novels whose authors gave their protagonistsâ sexual identity liminal presence. Focusing mainly on other aspects of their traits, the charactersâ non-normative sexual identity remained only hinted at, forcing the readers to draw their own conclusion as to the level of queerness presented there. Precisely, particular lack of easily-identifiable sexual categories in Toibinâs The Master were fundamental to Stacey DâErasmoâs (2008) contention of the end of sexual identity in the contemporary novel. By reading the aforementioned texts through the lens of Eve Kosofsky--Sedgwickâs concept of âbachelor taxonomyâ (1990), this chapter will argue that the ambiguous yet non-explicit sexual orientation of the analysed protagonists is an alternative to stereotypical representation of homosexuality in fiction.
