These are unprecedented times for democratic traditions as world society drifts almost rudderless towards neo-liberal capitalist collapse without many alternative visions coming into view (Hyslop-Margison & Thayer, 2009). As a response, the authors present thematic and theoretical findings from a case study utilising grounded theory analytical procedures to look at aspects of active child and youth citizenship in Ontario, Canada. Their investigation focused on events associated with a youth rally hosted by Nobel nominee and childrenâs rights activist Craig Kielburger, and a heuristic model illustrating key findings is included to further contextualise this emergent global assemblage (Sassen, 2008) of childhood citizenship vis-Ã -vis adult power. The main argument from the research concerns the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC, 1989) as a transdisciplinary framework for critical citizenship education since the treaty cuts across orthodox knowledge silos to do with âchildhoodâ, âyouthâ and âcitizenshipâ (see also Mitchell, 2010; Doek, 2009). Although marginally implemented in Canada, previous contentions in that country over whether children have rights at all are being replaced with ongoing monitoring of this treaty and young peopleâs rights to participate more fully in society (UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, 1995, 2003). It is clear from the study that global phenomena associated with the Kielburgersâ international non-governmental organisation Free the Children offer a critical entry point into contemporary expressions of active, inclusive citizenship for tens of thousands of young people throughout the world.
