This paper explores the longstanding British practice of locating Italy as an inâbetween space, combining elements of both East and West, through examination of Thomas Coryatâs seventeenth-century travelogue Coryatâs Crudities. It questions how far Coryat participates in the portrayal of Venice as an âinnerâEuropean Orientâ situated between the powerful ideal of Renaissance Italy as archetype of Western civilisation and the equally powerful stereotypes of Italy as a morally and legally fraudulent sphere. Although Coryat reproduces this Janusâfaced image of Italy and reinforces stereotypes of Islam and the Orient in Italian culture, it is necessary to read his orientalisation of Italy as part of the larger cultural phenomenon of acknowledging that the East has always been part of the West.
