One of the best-known and most representative movements to call themselves "Satanist" is the Church of Satan, founded in California in 1966 by Szandor LaVey. It was initiated to worship Satan and thus oppose the evil that was perceived in the Christian spirit of the established churches. In this contribution the author discusses the question whether the label "satanic," in the usual sense of being evil and harmful to people is applicable to the "Satanist" Church of Satan. How "satanic" is Satanism?
