Since the 1990s, the sexual citizenship of lesbians, gay men and same-sex couples has been placed on the political agenda in many countries. Calls for sexual citizenship rights include demands for reproductive rights, relationship rights and immigration rights, among others. Using data gathered from published reports by international lesbian and gay rights organisations and by national advocacy activist groups as well as by international and national human rights organisations, this chapter provides an overview of the current legal climate for gay men and lesbians as it relates to their ability to access social rights as “out” sexual citizens. The chapter also includes a discussion of some theoretical and methodological dilemmas raised in developing an intersectional and comparative analysis of sexual citizenship including an assessment of the value of different research models developed for the study of sexual citizenship in comparative perspective.
