All research environments can be called âinterpretive communitiesâ (Fish 1980), where activities are assessed according to scientific principles that are functional within that community. With cognitive poetics (e.g. Stockwell 2002, Semino & Culpeper 2002, Gavins & Steen 2003) a research environment has emerged that is grounded in a British tradition of stylistics. My starting point here is that this kind of cognitive poetics is an âinterpretive communityâ where in general stylistic methodology is used, only to be secondarily linked to terminology from cognitive science â far from the basic principles agreed upon in the community of researchers within cognitive science.

Instead I propose that a cognitive poetics should proceed from methodological principles that apply in cognitive science per se. That is, first, a given problem is formulated in terms of information processing, secondly a cognitive architecture is specified for studying the problem, and third, the analysis is developed in terms of algorithmic sequencing â in total the cognitive analysis should make as explicit as possible how the information is processed from inputs to output (Hogan 2003).

As an example and to discuss my points about poetics, stylistics, cognitive architecture and more, I provide an analysis of Wallace Stevensâ poem âTheory.â
