In his narration accompanying his four Faust Films, 1987-89, Brakhage recapitulates some of the major themes of his writings. He also retraces the path of his own aesthetic development from psychodrama to his later understanding of film as âlight moving in timeâ. As a summation of Brakhageâs life work, the four films can be read on several levels: the autobiographical/everyman, the aesthetic/philosophical, the perceptual/cognitive, and the performative/somatic.
