Many children and teens are actively engaged in using multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs). Many MUVEs are built around gaming scenarios, in which users operate to fulfill specific objectives. As the technology matures, MUVEs are becoming more vivid, detailed, and realistic, yet fanciful. A number of technology forecasters predict that multi-user virtual environments are the next evolution of the Internet. K-12 educators must plan for the future use of MUVEs in K-12 education. As the technology continues to improve and obstacles are overcome, these virtual environments will become increasingly complex and immersive while more closely aligning to the curriculum. Virtual worlds are created and developed based on the imagination and skills of their users. Educators must continue to examine this technology and to identify ways that it can be used to improve the delivery of instruction to K-12 students.
