Rumen bolus systems became commercially available due to rapid advancements in battery and IoT (Internet of Things) communication technologies in recent years. Rumen bolus technologies provide an opportunity to collect more data points than external wearable monitoring systems. This article introduces the evolution of the Moonsyst rumen bolus system; a rumen monitoring device and associated application. Beside the animal activity it provides real-time physiological data that are difficult to obtain, such as accurate rumen temperature, water intake and rumen pH values. The bolus (sensor node) is administered into the rumen of cattle and measures different parameters which are forwarded utilising an IoT Gateway to the cloud-based software application, where sophisticated algorithms translate the data into useful information for improved farm management. The data transmission tool performs continuous transmission of the measured biomarkers and the novel integration of the machine learning method, assessing the data and provides relevant information back to the farmer. During the construction of the device our aim was to develop a system that could be a suitable solution for the monitoring of beef and dairy cattle.
