Actually there is a continuous debate in Ecuador on renewable energy and the production of the basic food crops due to the Ecuadorian government’s decision to promote the crop of African palm and to increase biodiesel production to favour alternative energy sources to fossil mineral oil. The influence of industrial companies on this debate is very important, as well as the conflicts of interest between these companies and agriculturists, regarding the use and cultivation of the African palm tree. Therefore it is also necessary to revise possible changes in Ecuadorian politics to promote investment in this kind of energy crops, in order to mitigate the negative impact on rural areas. The aim of this paper is to advance some results obtained in the doctoral thesis research where the economic and social problems regarding the production of biofuel have been explored. Here we analyse the financial data of the production of biofuel of African palm in Ecuador between years 2006 and 2012, in that period took place an important growth of African palm cultivation. The method that will be used in this empirical study is a quantitative analysis of financial and economic data and the hypothesis is that the production costs reaching to proportion of 40% in relation to Free on Board exports in millions of dollars. These data are based on our review of policy objectives of the Ecuadorian government, regarding the development of biofuel and the improvement of advantage economic. We conclude that economic and social problems regarding the production of biofuel will be explored because African palm oil is sensitive to – highly volatile – oil prices.
