Institutions and governance are important for the proper functioning of markets. In this chapter we illustrate the importance of adequate institutions and governance structures for protection of property rights and market participation of small farmers. To this end we consider three cases: cattle trading in Uganda, water management in the Peninsula of Santa Elena, and biodiversity conservation in relation to indigenous knowledge. The results indicate that the asymmetry of information embedded in present markets and governance structures hinders smallholders to fully benefit from the values incorporated in their property rights.
