Equine breeding in Central-Southern Italy is often related to the agricultural characteristics and to the climate. Often when irrigation is not possible, the summer dryness represents a limiting factor for cultivation and for intensive animal breeding. This situation, together with local traditions, influences the agricultural choices and also animal production possibilities. In this part of Italy animal production and, consequently, equine production, are directed toward the exploitation of marginal lands that actually play a considerable role in the sustainable agriculture. Interest is directed toward some indigenous horse populations destined for saddle, meat and milk production, toward mules that are more and more requested for work and toward asses that are used for milk production mainly directed to infant nutrition. The authors show the most important traits and advantages of these kinds of equine production, that are increasingly being used for the exploitation of marginal lands in Central-Southern Italy.
