Animal production considerably contributes to the emissions of methane and nitrous oxide. Both gases contribute to global warming. Insight into the processes and influencing factors that play a role in the production and transport of these gases is essential to identify strategies for abatement of their emissions. Methane is mainly produced from enteric fermentation and its production is strongly related with the animal diet. It is also produced from animal manures, depending on manure composition, temperature, presence of bacteria and pH. Nitrous oxide originates from nitrogen related processes nitrification and de-nitrification, and its production greatly depends on the nitrogen pressure, soil conditions and the availability of an energy source (carbon). Because of their poor solubility in water, the methane and nitrous oxide produced will easily be transported to the atmosphere, so reducing measures at the source or ‘beginning of pipe’ have to be considered. Most important ways to reduce methane emissions is through dietary measures (e.g. reducing the amount of roughage), by adapting the housing system (innovative floor systems, resulting in separation of faeces and urine), manure management (cooling), manure treatment (e.g. acidification), and air purification (bio-filters). Nitrous oxide emissions can be reduced by pasture and fertilization management, resulting in a reduction of the nitrogen pressure, and herd management (restricted grazing). Because of the difference in the origin of methane (carbon cycle) and nitrous oxide (nitrogen cycle), interactions between their emissions and between options for mitigation of other pollutant emissions (ammonia, nitrate) have to be taken into account.
