Would a divine being, a greatest conceivable being, have the moral authority to forgive all wrongs? Ivan, a character in Dostoevskyâs Brothers Karamazov, argues that God cannot forgive wrongs to which He is a third party and so He cannot insure, as He promises, that He will bring about a ânew heaven and a new earthâ in which all people are reconciled with each other. In this argument, Ivan appears to take the stance that a human victim is the only person who has the moral prerogative to decide whether or not to forgive his victimiser.
