Abbreviations
I have tried to follow the abbreviations found in A Greek-English Lexicon 9th Edition (Liddell, Scott and Jones) for authors and titles of Greek literary works; the Oxford Latin Dictionary for those of Latin literary works; and the Oxford Classical Dictionary for all other titles. A few abbreviations, well known but of particular relevance to this study:
| CAH | Cambridge Ancient History |
| DK | Fragmente der Vorsokratiker, Sixth edition, H. Diels and W. Kranz ed. (1952) |
| EGM | Early Greek Mythography, R.L. Fowler ed. (2000, 2013). Also referred to as Fowler 2000/2013. |
| FGrHist | Die Fragmente der griechischen Historiker, F. Jacoby ed. (1923–) |
| IG | Inscriptiones Graecae (1873–) |
| LM | Early Greek Philosophy, Loeb Classical Library, A. Laks and G. Most eds. (2016). Typically by volume number and then fragment designation, or when obvious, just fragment designation (e.g. ‘D.L. 9.20 = DK 21 A1, LM D1’ = ‘Diogenes Laertius 9.20 = Diels Kranz 21 A1, Laks & Most Xenophanes D1’). |
| M-W | Fragmenta Hesiodea, R. Merkelbach and M. West eds. (1967) |
| PMG | Poetae Melici Graeci, D. Page ed. (1962) |
| SEG | Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum (1923–) |
| SIG3 | Sylloge Inscriptionum Graecarum, Third edition, W. Dittenberger ed. (1915–24) |
| West2 | Iambi et Elegi Graeci, Second edition, M. West ed. (1998) |
