Abstract

Since the last wave of the movement took place in the later stage of the Down to the Countryside Campaign, both researchers and ordinary people regard the movement as an integral part of the campaign. The chapter introduces the perspective of social movements and puts forth a quantitative analysis. The results show that Party campaigns and mass movements are different. Throughout this monograph, the Back to the City Movement is defined as follows: It was a democratic movement by the Chinese people to fight for the right of free migration. It was the only successful social movement after the communist takeover.
