Acknowledgements
This book owes a debt of gratitude to many friends and colleagues who have contributed to its development over the last ten years. I list them below and offer them my sincere thanks.
At Brill I am grateful for the diligent support of Christa Stevens, Masja Horn and Melissa Henson. Two conferences were part of the active work on this project – in 2016, Replacement, based at Birkbeck, University of London, and coorganised with Jean Owen; and in 2025, the online Money and Gender conference, coorganised with James Brown and Kate Maclean. I also want to thank colleagues in the Guilt Group, the Freud Reading Group and the Cultural Literacy initiative. Individuals who have contributed in multiple ways are (alphabetically) Suzanne Bardgett, Shaul Bar Haim, Hagar Ben-Zion, Sophie Defrance, Ora Dresner, Stephen Frosh, Sander Gilman, Philippe Grimbert, Ann Hallamore Caesar, Nagihan Haliloglu, Roberta Harris, Michael Hilton, Fiona Macintosh, Jonathan Magonet, Niall Martin, Jann Matlock, Karen Offen, Orsolya Petőcz, Sara Rance, Naomi Tadmor and Karen Young.
Throughout the book, unless otherwise stated in the Bibliography, all translations from French, German and Hebrew are my own and the reference given is to the original text. Any quotation without a page-reference comes from the last-cited page and the author’s name will not be stated if announced in the same sentence. In the cases of poetry and drama I give both original and translation. All references to the Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud, translated by James Strachey, Alix Strachey, Anna Freud et al., will be preceded in this book by the abbreviation ‘SE’ and the volume number. Lastly, any emphasis in a quotation, unless otherwise signalled, is the author’s.
