The paradoxes of “voluptuous panic” and ‘the pleasure of tragedy,’ discussed in Chapter 2, derive from the traditional aesthetic ‘appearance (pseudo-reality, “Schein”) theory’ that play is not real, but fictional, and based on a ‘pretending consciousness.’ This chapter critiques this argument, referencing Bateson’s “double bind” theory, and proposes a new solution. The key to solving the paradox of the appearance theory lies in the recognizing the unique nature of the being that has been called appearance, and the emotions it evokes.
