Au début du XXe siècle, les peintures et gravures avec des images comme celles-ci n’étaient pas rares. Bien que Martin du Gard ait connu aussi des artistes allemands, il n’est pas certain qu’il ait été au courant de l’oeuvre de Mueller. En tout cas, l’image cadre avec le moment de la sensibilisation sexuelle de Bertrand (cf. les « trois gamines » de la mare).
