Abstract

Edith Carrington (1853â1929) collected and published a wide variety of material to challenge pre-existing notions on the inferiority of non-human animals and the justification of their suffering. Regardless of how active she was in her literary and political efforts towards the end of the nineteenth century, Carringtonâs contributions to the anti-vivisection and animal welfare movement remains undiscussed. Beyond advocating for greater scholarly engagement with her works, my focus on Edith Carringtonâs efforts seeks to acknowledge that the literary history of animals relies heavily on certain divisions between species; either an animal is used for companionship, sustenance, or labour. Carringtonâs political and literary works, however, foreground the shared experience between different animals. My study on Edith Carrington looks at the ways in which non-pets, âfood animalsâ and working animals, are (re)imagined and represented in literary discourse. Brenda Ayres, for instance, describes animals as ânecessary source of meat,â doing away with the divisionary boundaries I outlined about which animal is free, in other words, from being reduced to a thing that must be eaten. In Carringtonâs works, the divisionary boundaries between âfoodâ and working animals as sources of consumption is done away with, thereby allowing the âfoodâ/working animal to slip into the pet/companion category, animals capable of accessing the domestic and familial realm.
