In the course of writing this book, which was undertaken as part of the project entitled ‘TransLatin: The Transnational Impact of Latin Theatre from the Early Modern Netherlands’ (2020–2025), the surveys written by Roloff, Wimmer, IJsewijn and Sacré, Grund, Tilg, Griffin, Kindermann and the volume edited by Norland and myself (see the Bibliography, pp. 115–37) were consulted. In addition to the bibliography given here, an extensive ‘Bibliography of Neo-Latin Drama’, compiled by the undersigned and Robin O. Buning, and work in progress, is available, see https://translatin.nl.
Unless otherwise stated, the translations in this book are made by the present author. With regard to the names of authors, a practical approach was adopted in determining between the humanist Latin name and the original. In most cases the most common name has been used, and in many cases the Latin or vernacular alternative has also been given.
I would like to express my profound gratitude to the members of the TransLatin team: postdoctoral researcher Dinah Wouters, PhD student Andrea Peverelli, project assistant Robin O. Buning, and the DH and DI people, especially Marieke van Erp. Additionally, I would like to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Jirsi Reinders and Judith Brouwer, and the members of the Digital Infrastructure team at the Institute, particularly Dirk Roorda, who has meticulously prepared numerous Neo-Latin dramas for online presentation, as well as James A. Parente, Jr, who has always been an interested and learned supporter of the project. I would also like to express my gratitude to our research fellow, Julia Jennifer Beine, and our dedicated volunteer, Bram Boers. The collaborative efforts of this group have been instrumental in the success of this project. Finally, gratitude is extended to the anonymous peer reviewers and my friend Geert Blijham, whose insightful feedback on an earlier version of this book is greatly appreciated. The project was generously funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and hosted by the Huygens Institute for the History and Culture of the Netherlands.
