The place names are given in French rather than Dutch or Flemish in this monograph. Hence Lille rather than Rijsel, Arras (Atrecht), Braine-le-Comte (‘s-Gravenbrakel), Mons (Bergen), Tournai (Doornik), Valenciennes (Valencijn). In the Flemish-speaking areas, that version of the place name has been given, for example Kortrijk rather than Courtrai. Although where there is a commonly used English name for a town this has been used: Antwerp instead of Anvers or Antwerpen, Ghent (Gand or Gent), Ypres (Ypre or Ieper).
