Abstract

In this chapter, using narrative inquiry, through a reflective self-study I share my learning process towards obtaining my doctoral degree for novice researchers to draw out some lessons. From my personal memory, professional and academic reflective journal writings as data, I particularly share how I handled critical supervisorâs feedback on aspects that ultimately influenced the reconceptualisation of my argument in the study. These aspects were writing literature review, the role of theory in research, data analysis, writing and discussions of findings. The chapter is concluded by reflecting on my postdoctoral phase to shed light upon the silent voices, motivations, and goals that directly or indirectly contributed towards my professional excellence, identity, and survival in academia. This way of concluding, I hope, would inspire and provoke young academics to embark on a doctoral journey keeping in mind that getting lost along the way does not mean never reaching a destination, and that the destination itself may well be different from that which was imagined (Stanley, 2015). The significance of this chapter is that it provides a rich source of an embodied experience to doctoral students and potential students, and emerging supervisors.
