Abstract

This chapter explores the complex nature of privacy in early modern diplomacy, emphasising that privacy should be considered as culture- and context-dependent. It argues for intersectional, methodologically supported studies of early modern diplomatic actors, focusing on how gender, personal behaviours, and spatial practices may influence diplomatic negotiations, mediation, and reporting. The study highlights the importance of “enabling and disabling factors” related to a diplomat’s physical and social presence, which can significantly impact diplomatic tasks. Focusing specifically on “gendered privacy regimes,” the chapter examines selected early modern egodocuments to reveal how privacy was discursively constructed around public figures such as the English Queen Elizabeth I. A central example analysed is the 1597 embassy of Polish nobleman, Paweł Działyński, to Elizabeth I. Działyński’s highly politicised report frames Elizabeth using emotive and monstrous rhetoric to depict her as a tyrant driven by private desires, thus discrediting her rule. In contrast, the travel account by a Silesian man of letters, Paul Hentzner, offers a more restrained, formal portrayal of Elizabeth, focusing on her appearance, behaviour, and presence in the royal palace. Although neither text explicitly discusses privacy, both construct it rhetorically. The chapter’s key concern is how the ambiguous boundary between the private and public spheres can serve political ends in diplomatic narratives and how a consideration of privacy as a strategic and socially mediated category can deepen the understanding of early modern diplomatic relations.
