In the Conclusion, the findings of this study are summarized. It confirms the thesis that Ṭaha’s unique and explicit reliance on premodern Sufi thought allows him to go beyond his modernist predecessors and contemporaries in bringing Islam into the modern age, in particular with his Islamic theory of evolution and his views on democratic governance and the rights of women and non-Muslims. Some of Ṭaha’s radical Sufi views may discourage contemporary Muslims to identify with his views, but his neglected contribution may nevertheless be a considerable source of inspiration for the ongoing Muslim debate concerning the relevance of Islam in the modern world.
