Abstract

William of Ockham sets forth his account of propositions de contigenti by means of the application of De Morgan’s rules to the case of possibility and necessity. By focusing on Ockham’s account, this article explains not only in which (formal) way Ockham distinguishes contingency from possibility, but also what the logical relations are between propositions de contingenti and the other modal propositions. Starting from one of the modal squares provided by Ockham in his commentary on the De interpretatione and following step by step Ockham’s claims about propositions de contigenti, the aim is to draw a first significant version of (Blanché’s) modal hexagon involving contingency, possibility, and necessity.
