Abstract

The global landscape of higher education is marked by an increasing trend of transnational mobility where students traverse national borders in pursuit of advanced academic degrees. I joined this trend to advance my career ambitions, secure a better education for my children, and fulfil a dream I had had since my early university days. This transnational journey is not merely a geographical transition but encompasses profound academic, social, cultural, and even emotional shifts. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the intricate experiences I have had as a Chinese doctoral student in Australia through a three-moment field analysis of my trajectories. The analysis in this chapter highlights the sociological dynamics of an international student’s doctoral journey. It underscores the need for adaptability in facing new challenges and the importance of leveraging existing capital and readjusting habitus to succeed in academic and social realms.
