Abstract

This chapter argues that the meditative practice of reading is fundamentally intermedial. The Instructions Solides et Consolantes pour rendre facile et utile l’Exercice de l’Oraison, written by the Jesuit Jean Crasset and first published in 1672, will serve as an example to demonstrate that although the meditations in the book are based solely on the medium of text, individual meditators introduce other media through the back door. It will demonstrate this by analysing a copy of the book printed in 1742, which belonged to the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. Over the course of the second half of the eighteenth century, the book was heavily annotated by multiple individuals, presumably students of the seminary. In their handwritten annotations, the students cite from other Sulpician books on spirituality and write down short prayers that align with the content of the printed text, allowing us to trace their thought process while studying and meditating. The annotations also introduce visual elements through ekphrastic intertextual references, but also by inserting monograms and miniature drawings of hearts. The handwritten annotations suggest a certain desire on the part of the readers to compensate for the austerity of Crasset’s meditation by introducing (more or less reluctantly) other media which enhance their reading experience. As this chapter shows, their writing and drawing thus reappropriates Crasset’s text by turning the book into an intermedial artefact.
