Abstract
In this anonymous address to her audience, Thomasine Gyllembourg contrasts the mores of the two periods in which her Two Ages: A Novella takes place. The first period is during the French Revolution, when people were heedless but sincere. The second period is her present day, i.e., the 1840s, and now everyone seems more cautious but also hypocritical.
