Abstract

This chapter begins with an exploration of key questions concerning the nature and pursuit of happiness, namely, whether a happy life is best understood as fundamentally (i) objective or subjective, (ii) transient, structurally stable, or permanent, (iii) moral or amoral, and (iv) intellectual or physical. Next, I describe eudaimonism as a particular ethical approach to happiness and offer historical background on key figures within ancient Greek eudaimonism and early modern engagement with these thinkers. I then discuss Spinozaâs background and engagement with ancient and early modern philosophers, and clarify my reasons for focusing specifically on his dialogue with Aristotle, Epicurus, and the Stoics. Next, I outline potential issues with adopting eudaimonistic frameworks in a modern context, which may or may not apply also to Spinozaâs moral philosophy. I conclude with a description of the core arguments and overall structure of this book.
