Abstract

This chapter addresses the fundamental need to define deliberation in order to systematically investigate how empathy affects the deliberative process. The chapter proposes a standard definition (SD) of deliberation, conceptualizing the deliberative process as a mental activity aimed at deciding, through the weighing of different kinds of reasons, what to think (theoretical deliberation) and what to do (practical deliberation). The analysis focuses particularly on what I term “other-directed deliberation” – those deliberative processes that involve or have as their primary object one or more people. More specifically, other-directed theoretical deliberation aims to decide, through the weighing of different kinds of reasons, what beliefs to adopt about another person, while other-directed practical deliberation aims to determine how to act toward that person. When moral considerations enter into this process, the deliberation becomes characteristically moral in nature. The chapter also examines the complex relationship between affective states and deliberation.
