Abstract

This text explores critical food design as a discipline that, unlike utility-focused affirmative design, adopts discursive and experimental approaches to provoke new ways of thinking about food, objects, and their contexts. I argue that the motivations behind critical food design are aligned with the pragmatist view of design as refining embodied experiences, which links critical food design to Richard Shusterman’s somaesthetic theory. I examine critical food design through the lens of somaesthetics to show that Shusterman’s theory provides a useful framework for the study and practice of critical food design. First, I analyze the role of design in today’s food challenges and discuss the complexity and increasing relevance of food design. Subsequently, I explore critical design’s critique of cultural, economic, and political forces shaping consumption and the ways in which critical food design fosters reflection on these issues, while enhancing our understanding of somatic food practices. My argument unfolds in three stages focused on self-knowledge, social context, and action. I conclude with three case studies to demonstrate these intersections in practice.
