Abstract

âWater,â as Greta Gaard (2017) points out, âis a feminist issueâ (81). This diagnosis not only reflects the popular trope of linking women and water which is present in many global cultures (see Staniland 2023), but also surfaces as waterâs gendered materiality influences the intersections of environmental systems and biological bodies. Astrida Neimanis in her Bodies of Water: Posthuman Feminist Phenomenology (2017) stresses waterâs capacity to connect female bodies âto other bodies, to other worlds beyond our human selves,â thus presenting an opportunity to challenge anthropocentrism by exploring our involvement in âa more-than-human hydrocommonsâ (2). In this perspective, the link between female bodies and water becomes a sphere of potential connectivity and agency, offering an opportunity to explore postmothering relationships of care (see Phillips 2016). The chapter focuses on two literary explorations of feminist hydrocommons: Robin Wall Kimmererâs non-fiction work Braiding Sweetgrass (2013) and Joanna Batorâs short fiction âTikkun Olamâ (2022), arguing that both texts present the potential for renewal, reclaiming agency and reconnecting with other (both human and other-than-human) bodies through the narratives of womenâs custody of bodies of water. It is argued that in both works in question, the authors focus on the sense of purpose and consolation stemming from the refiguration of multivarious entanglements as networks of mutual relationships rooted in care, which in turn allows them to transgress âmotherhood environmentalismâ frequently ascribed to feminist narratives and instead explore the liberating potential of experiencing embodied more/than/human relatedness.
