Abstract

When the first Book of Common Prayer was put into use in 1549, Thomas Cranmer and the English Reformers under Edward VI faced significant challenges in implementing the new forms of worship. Although congregational participation was facilitated by the transition from worship in Latin to worship in English, remaining challenges included the unavailability of Prayer Books, the unfamiliarity of congregations with taking active roles in worship, and the relatively low levels of literacy among the general population. To address these impediments, the Reformers created a multifaceted strategy to achieve services of worship in which everyone actively participated. Facets of this strategy included Prayer Book rubrics that instruct clergy and their congregations about how to stage the recitation of the longer texts, the use of Prayer Book texts printed on the walls of churches, and the requirement that some of these texts be memorised by people preparing for Confirmation.
