Abstract

Painful memories and traumatic experiences are often a central feature in oral history interviews. In fact, a defining characteristic of oral history as an approach in the new millennium has been the growing interest in and activity by oral historians documenting topics with elements of trauma. With a longer history of oral history projects rooted in experiences of wars and the horrors of genocide, especially the Holocaust, oral history exploring difficult topics has grown dramatically in scope as well as scale to address a variety of subjects and periods. Despite research into these difficult experiences, there is still a real need for oral historians to be more fully educated on the practical consequences of encounters with difficult memories or trauma in interviews. Expanded project-based exchanges between oral historians and mental health professionals can offer a host of useful insights to develop oral history practice. Principles and approaches learned in this way can both equip oral historians to be better stewards of the trust narrators extend in sharing their stories and enhance the quality of the research. This chapter draws on an oral history project interviewing survivors of genocide where an oral historian worked closely with a psychologist at every stage of the oral history project â researching, planning, interviewing, and follow-up. Such exchanges revealed important issues and practices that oral historians should be aware of in conducting trauma-informed oral history. Most of these focus on that dual concern for the interviewees and the research, but this discussion also explores the vicarious effects such work can have on oral historians as well.
