Abstract

After elaborating on the biographical and cultural aspectsâwhich at first glance would make difficult a comparison between Dante born in Florence in 1265 and NezÄmi born a century earlier in Ganja around 1140âthe author reviews a number of thematic junctures which reveal a certain commonality of intellectual and spiritual interests between the two great poets. They point to the many possible areas of comparability: the role of the poet and the function of poetry; the spiritualized love for a woman who later turns out to be also an inspirational muse; the theme of the journey to a Beyond, which has strong initiatory connotations; the conception of power and kingship; as well as the relationship between faith and reason, that is, between revelation and philosophy. All themes show, albeit in different degrees, a common aspect: the contiguity in the two poets between poetry and theology, between poetic creation and spirituality.
