Journeying into found poetry
The Road to Found Poetry: Understanding People’s Perceptions and Lived Experiences Creatively is a book based on my Doctor in Education thesis. The book aims to introduce the use of found poetry as an alternative means of knowing and understanding in various educational and non-educational contexts. Its goal is to encourage educational researchers, educators, academics, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and practitioners interested in experimenting with a novel approach to analysis, presentation and dissemination that helps gain a deeper insight into research participants’ experiences.
In doing so, this book aims to move beyond traditionally accepted research methods and offer a better understanding of people’s perceptions and lived experiences. This new arts-based research methodology is participatory in nature and honors the voice of both researchers and research participants, creating possibilities for researchers’ reflexivity and participants’ agency.
The cover of this book features a drawing of my son, Mousa, who was 12 years old at the time of writing this manuscript.
I hope this book will provide the reader with an in-depth knowledge of how to use poetry in and as research. The manuscript will include a range of examples to demonstrate the use of found poetry in arts-based qualitative research.
