Index of Names
Footnotes have not been indexed. The names of contributors to this volume are included only when their work is substantively discussed in the chapters. Entries are listed continuously, without distinction between pre- and post-1800 figures.
All names appear as spelled by the respective contributors. In most cases, Latin names have been rendered in their modern English forms. Arabic names follow standardized modern transliterations and are alphabetized according to the element following al‑. This rule does not apply to names beginning with ibn, which are listed under the letter I.
Names are generally indexed by surname or second name, except when that name clearly indicates geographic origin and is introduced by ‘of’. For example, Thomas Aquinas is listed as Aquinas, Thomas; Francesco Maurolico as Maurolico, Francesco. In contrast, William of Ockham is indexed as William of Ockham, and Christophoro de Recaneto as Christophoro de Recaneto.
