This volume uses the International Journal of Middle East Studies (IJMES) transliteration system for Arabic, Persian, Ottoman and Modern Turkish. Exceptions include initial hamza, some names of places and persons, as well as anglicized words that can be found in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (e.g. minbar, mihrab, madrasa, iwan, Abbasid, Muhammad, Qurʾan).
