Abstract

This chapter presents the ritual use of the sacred plant called Santa Rosa (Cannabis) in diverse OtomÃ communities which keep a ritual connection with the plant and use it to heal. The Santa Rosa is the quintessential OtomÃ sacred plant, since today it is widely used by multiple Ã±Ã¼hÃ¼ communities in Mexico. Santa Rosa is identified as Cannabis, but it is also not the drug Cannabis in the OtomÃ world view because it is more than that, it is a deity that helps the healer to cure diseases. Santa Rosa, called XÃ¼nfÃ¶ DÃ«ni in their language, which means the sacred flower or the flower lady, is identified with the Antigua, an ancestor deity that protects the OtomÃ. In the Sierra Norte of Puebla Santa Rosa is called âthe worldâs nurseâ precisely because of her ability to heal the sick, which is transferred to the initiated healers, the bÃ¤di and zidÃ«ni. These healing practices with Santa Rosa engage core aspects of the OtomÃ culture when used by the ritual specialists: the bÃ¤di who is the one who heals; and the zidÃ«ni, who eats the flower to heal. To cure by using the sacred plant of Santa Rosa, the ritual specialists are chosen by the Antigua and initiated by her during sleep. After their initiation the bÃ¤di and the zidÃ«ni work together in the rituals and consultations to heal.
