This essay is a personal reflection on living in Dublin as a reader of Joyce’s work. Dublin’s relative smallness, and Joyce’s vast and multifarious presence within it, make for a uniquely intimate and total relationship between an artist and a city. The essay explores this relationship, looking at the ways in which it enriches and deepens the experience of the city, as well as the ways in which it is sometimes cynically exploited for commercial and political ends.
