Abstract

The rule of reductio ad absurdum (to prove p, assume not-p, and infer a contradiction) is indispensable for the Aristotelian deductive system. It is needed to establish certain conversions and thereby to prove the validity of all but the four purely universal syllogistic moods. RashÄ«d ad-DÄ«n al-Waá¹wÄá¹ (d.Â 1182) wrote a treatise rejecting the validity of such reductio proofs, thus questioning the consistency of the entire Peripatetic deductive system. The present article provides an analysis of these arguments and discusses and evaluates the responses by Ibn GhaylÄn al-BalkhÄ« (d. ca.Â 1194), ShihÄb ad-DÄ«n as-SuhrawardÄ« (d.Â 1191), and Fakhr ad-DÄ«n ar-RÄzÄ« (d.Â 1210). I argue that it was not until ar-RÄzÄ« that al-Waá¹wÄá¹âs arguments were decisively disproved. Taking the discursive dynamics of 12th century contributors to this debate as a guiding thread, this article sheds new light on the early post-GhazÄlian developments in the history of Arabic logic as a contested area of philosophy in the Islamic East.
