Abstract

Among commentators, it is widely discussed whether the persuasion provided by the preludes is rational and philosophical, or irrational and affective. This paper intends to show that the aim of the preludes is to raise some specific affects in citizens, and that therefore, from this point of view, the persuasion carried out by the preludes is affective in nature. (It does not follow, however, that the persuasion is irrational and unphilosophical.) First, it shows that the preludes intend to shape the thinking (dianoia) of citizens and foster in them opinions (doxai). Then, it argues that these doxai all ultimately lead to the thesis that there are gods and that they care about us. It concludes by showing that this first opinion must inspire two specific affects in citizens, which are the condition of all virtuous human conduct: fear of divine punishment in the beyond, and restraint or shame. The conclusion suggests that these two types of affects actually correspond to one and the same feeling: the âgood fearâ, which persuades us to live as slaves to the law, in other words, to exercise temperance.
